Retired NY Principal Pleads Guilty to Child Porn Charges in Broward

first_imgA longtime school administrator and teacher from Syracuse, New York, who retired to Fort Lauderdale, is now facing up to 20 years in federal prison after pleading guilty last week to possessing child pornography, according to prosecutors.Officials says 75-year-old Frank Richard “Rick” Beyer Jr. was arrested on November 20 after FBI agents received several cyber-tips last April that he had been uploading pictures and videos of young boys engaged in sexual activity. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children passed along a tip from Google that said Beyer had uploaded the content to a Gmail account. According to court records, the tips included an email address which led investigators to Beyer. They found external hard drives, an iPad, and a laptop computer in his home, along with a DropBox account and Cloud storage platform that contained photographs and videos of children engaging in “explicit sexual conduct with other children or adults.”Beyer worked as a teacher and administrator for the Syracuse City School District from 1967 until 2002, when he retired to Broward County. He pleaded guilty on Thursday and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 18 in federal court in Fort Lauderdale.last_img read more

Dick makes debut as England seek to bridge ten year gap

first_img1 Jul 2014 Dick makes debut as England seek to bridge ten year gap Jamie Dick (Forest Hills, Gloucestershire) is the only new cap in the six-strong England team for the European Boys Team Championships at Oslo Golf Club in Norway on 8th – 12th July. But four of last year’s squad have again been selected as England seeks to win the title for the first time in ten years. Bradley Moore (Kedleson Park, Derbyshire), Marco Penge (Worthing, Sussex), Jack Singh Brar (Remedy Oak, Dorset) and Ashton Turner (Kenwick Park, Lincolnshire) played in last year’s championships in Scotland, while Haydn McCullen (Delamere Forest, Cheshire) completes this year’s line-up. Dick, 18, (Image © Leaderboard Photography) won the Darwin Salver but lost a sudden death playoff for the Welsh Open Stroke Play Championship and tied fourth in the Welsh Youth Championship, all this year. The 2013 South West Boys champion recently represented England Golf in the German Boys Championship. McCullen, 17, a former under 16 international, made his debut as a boy cap in last year’s Boys Home Internationals. He helped Lancashire win the County Championship last year after becoming Lancashire boy champion and this year he won the McEvoy Trophy, reached the last 32 of the Amateur Championship and is currently equal third on the Titleist/FootJoy England Golf Boys Order of Merit. Moore, 16, another former under 16 international, won the Irish Boys Open Championship recently after finishing runner-up to McCullen in the McEvoy Trophy having won it the previous year. In 2013, he won the European Young Masters in Germany, reached the semi-finals of the British Boys and was runner-up to Penge in the English Boys under 16 Championship. Penge, 16, became a boy international in last year’s European Boys Team Championships having been capped at under 16 level. The winner of the Fairhaven Trophy for the past two years, he defends the English Boys under 16 title later this month. Currently No.1 on the Boys Order of Merit, the Sussex lad has also finished runner-up in the Darwin Salver, third in the McEvoy Trophy and equal eighth in the Irish Open Amateur. Singh Brar, 17, was also capped at under 16 level before making his debut in the Boys Home Internationals in 2012. He enjoyed two victories last year, the Berkhamsted Trophy and the South of England Boys Championship while he finished runner-up in the Duke of York Young Champions tournament, the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship and the Hampshire Boys. Finished fourth in defence of the Berkhamsted Trophy this year. Turner, 18, became a boy cap in these championships in 2012 in Sweden and has been a regular pick since then. A former Lincolnshire boy champion, last year he won the Darwin Salver and the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship, finished second in the McEvoy Trophy and represented GB&I in the Jacques Leglise Trophy. England has not won the Boys European title since 2004 in Finland. A runners-up spot was achieved in 2007 in Denmark while England has finished fourth in the past two years.last_img read more

Allan Donald: White Lightning

first_imgKnown affectionately as “White Lightning”, he was feared and respected by batsmen the world over, and was one of the main reasons why South Africa’s return to international cricket was so successful.Early in his career, he captured 12 for 139 against India in Port Elizabeth in December 1992 to help the Proteas to victory on a pitch that was not recognised as conducive to fast bowling. (Image: Wikimedia Commons)Brand South Africa ReporterThe first Protea to capture 300 test wickets, Allan Donald was for some time the most successful Test bowler in South African cricketing history, and ranks among the best in the history of the game. His sensational strike rate says it all: he picked up a est wicket in just under every 47 balls, or every eight overs he delivered. By the time he announced his retirement from the Test arena in early 2002, he had taken 330 wickets at an average of 22.25 runs per wicket.Donald captured five wickets in an innings on 20 occasions and took 10 or more on three occasions. Known affectionately as “White Lightning”, he was feared and respected by batsmen the world over, and was one of the main reasons why South Africa’s return to international cricket was so successful.Stunning debutSouth Africa’s return from isolation began with the country’s first official one-day international, against India in November 1991. Donald made a stunning debut before more than 90 000 Indians at Eden Gardens, claiming 5 for 29 in an exhibition of fast bowling that made the rest of the world sit up and take notice. His international test career began against the West Indies five months later.Early in his career, he captured 12 for 139 against India in Port Elizabeth in December 1992 to help the Proteas to victory on a pitch that was not recognised as conducive to fast bowling. He later tallied 11 wickets in a one-off test against Zimbabwe in October 1995, knocking over eight wickets in the Zimbabwean second innings as South Africa again claimed victory.Donald didn’t always enjoy the same success in limited overs cricket, and was sometimes left out of the South African one-day team. He was controversially dropped from the team at the quarterfinal stage of the 1996 World Cup. South Africa, who had easily beaten all opposition up to that point, were defeated by the West Indies and exited the competition.Greater ControlIn the latter part of his career, Donald chose to shorten his run up. While this cost him some speed, it gave him greater control, and the loss of pace did little to curb his effectiveness. In fact, if anything, it helped him become a better and more effective bowler. The change probably also prolonged his career.Besides appearing for South Africa, Donald was also an extremely successful performer on the English county circuit, spearheading Warwickshire’s bowling attack during a period in which they dominated the English game under former Protea coach, Bob Woolmer. In fact, Donald played more cricket for Warwickshire than for his South African province, Free State, and he is married to an English woman, Tina, from Birmingham. After missing the 2000 limited-overs Super Challenge Series against Australia, the tour of Sri Lanka, the Singapore Challenge and the ICC Knockout Tournament, and serving out his contract with Warwickshire, Donald once again set his sights on playing for his country. That was excellent news for South African cricket, especially in a year that had been a difficult one with the match-fixing scandal involving three Proteas, including former captain Hansie Cronje. Donald’s return once again sharpened the South African bowling attack, which in his absence had lacked a cutting edge.Last TestBut charging in and bowling consistently in excess of 140 kilometres an hour took its toll on Donald’s body, and he pulled up injured in his final Test, against the Australians at the Wanderers in February 2002.Donald missed the entire one-day series against Australia because of that injury and returned to the South African team in August only at the Morocco Cup tournament that also featured Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It was a triumphant return as, playing on wickets that offered little help to seamers, he finished at the top of the bowling averages in the competition, and also captured the second most wickets. His performances included a man of the match winning 4 for 43 against Pakistan in a crucial contest that South Africa won by just eight runs.Definitely back in favour after his performances in Morocco, Donald played in all three ODIs against Bangladesh in South Africa, and did a decent job as the Proteas crushed their opponents easily. In formIn the following series against Sri Lanka, a good one-day team, Donald performed superbly, capturing 10 wickets in the five-match series, second by just one wicket to Shaun Pollock. His average was a highly impressive 18.60.He also showed that although he might have lost some speed, he had certainly learnt many lessons along the path of his cricket career and could still remove the opposition’s top batsmen. In fact, eight of his 10 victims were specialist top-order batsmen. In the series-clinching victory in the fourth ODI in Kimberley Donald was exceptional, capturing 3 for 18 in his 10 overs. In South Africa’s final action before the World Cup Donald played in four of the five one-dayers against Pakistan. Again he enjoyed success against top-order batsmen and in two of his four outings he succeeded in stifling the Pakistani challenge with economic, wicket-taking spells.Unfortunately for “White Lightning” he struggled in the World Cup, failing to find his rhythm, something that was so pivotal to his success. He came in for severe criticism from the press and the much longed for winning swansong didn’t materialise as South Africa was eliminated without reaching the Super Six stage of the tournament. It was an ending unbefitting a great and passionate servant of South African cricket. It brought to an end the career of one of the greatest fast bowlers of his era, a man who could have achieved untold success had his international career not started at the relatively advanced age of 24.Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? Positive regional growth by 2010: IMF

first_img“We expect growth in sub-Saharan Africa to rise to four percent in 2010 and five percent in 2011,” IMF African department director Antoinette Monsio Sayeh said in Washington DC this week. Sayeh noted, however, that there were significant downside risks, to which, wherever possible, the IMF would remain supportive until economic recovery was well-established. According to the IMF, the fiscal balance – including grants – for the region as a whole has swung from a surplus of just over 1.25% of GDP in 2008 to an expected deficit of 4.75% in 2009. Prudent economic policies “As the recovery gains strength, the emphasis of fiscal policy will need to shift from stabilisation to medium-term considerations, including debt sustainability. “In many countries the prudent macroeconomic policies pursued in recent years have provided some policy space to counter the effects of the slowdown. “Accordingly, most countries have been able to maintain or even raise public spending, allowing fiscal deficits to widen temporarily. Where possible, monetary policy has also played a supportive role,” she said. New IMF commitments to sub-Saharan Africa had reached over US$3-billion so far this year, compared to some $1.1-billion for the whole of 2008 and only $0.1-billion in 2007, she said. “Looking ahead, it will be critical that other development partners support this effort and those of other international financial institutions.” 7 October 2009 “This contrasts with the much more limited increase in deficits observed in past global slowdowns, not only because the output shocks were smaller but also most likely because in previous downturns high initial deficits, often accompanied by high debt, limited room for manoeuvre,” the report noted.center_img “In countries with binding financing constraints, the room for fiscal policy is more limited and the primary focus will need to remain on reducing macroeconomic imbalances.” Financial sectors have been for the most part resilient, but prudential supervision will need to remain vigilant in the face of the impact of the economic slowdown on the quality of banks’ portfolios, the report noted. Commenting on the main findings of the IMF’s 2009 Regional Economic Outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa, Sayeh noted that many of the regional member states were hard hit by the crisis, reducing economic growth to just one percent in 2009 after a period of sustained high economic growth. Sayeh said oil exporters and middle income countries in the region have been particularly badly affected, while most low-income countries somewhat less so, adding that in most countries, however, the crisis will likely slow, if not reverse, progress on poverty reduction. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects a positive recovery in sub-Saharan Africa, despite the negative effects of the global economic crisis. Sayeh said that scaled-up financial support from the IMF has supported countries’ policy response, saying the doubling of lending limits and more flexible policies had facilitated a rapid response to countries’ needs. Whatever Happened To… Google Base

first_imgGoogle Base in 2011 & its More Successful Spin-offFast forward five years to April 2011 and Google Base still exists (and incidentally still labeled a “beta” product!), but it’s been scaled back in two big ways. Firstly, commercial product data has been separated out into a new Google property called Google Merchant Center, which launched in September 2009. Google Base is now restricted to “non-product data.” Data in the Merchant Center is being used in Google Commerce Search, the third generation of which was announced last week. As the name suggests, Google Commerce Search is a search engine for retail – a market which Google obviously sees huge potential in. The dream of creating a structured database of the world’s content has eluded Google’s grasp. But at least it got a bunch of useful retail data out of it.The Web world is nothing if not Darwinian: it’s survival of the fittest and products need to evolve with the times. Some Web products fly and some don’t. Those that don’t fly either die out, or evolve into something new. The latter is what happened to Google Base, which in 2011 is a shadow of its former self – and is even about to lose its API. It did however spin off a more successful offering, in the form of the Google Merchant Center for retailers. In this post, we look back on the initial vision for Google Base and then analyze what it actually evolved into. How Google Base Started Out in 2005For those of you whose memories don’t go back as far as Web 2.0, Google Base is an online database that launched in November 2005. At that time it enabled you to upload any type of information, along with “attributes” that described it further. Early examples of Google Base content included reviews, events, products and jobs. Some – but far from all – of the data was then surfaced in Google properties like search, Froogle and Local.A snapshot of Google Base homepage, circa January 2006 (source: Wayback Machine)Despite a clunky user interface and initial mixed reviews, Google Base was a promising product in late 2005 and early 2006 because of its potential to better structure Web content. At the time Google appeared to be aiming to use the product to improve its main search engine, but also to create other Google properties in verticals like e-commerce and classified ads. So there was a lot of talk at the time about it challenging eBay and Craigslist. This is how I summarized Google Base back in November 2005:Google Base may not be pretty to look at and it may be a centralized database, but the potential is there to turn it into a hugely valuable directory of structured content. Plus if they add APIs and start aggregating outside RSS feeds, then they could easily extend Google Base and remove the issues around it being a ‘walled garden’.In about April 2006, Google began to expand the number of vertical niches it covered in Google Base. The product was expanding, but how good was the data it was receiving and was there any sign of it being productively used? The other big difference between the 2011 Google Base and its 2005/2006 version: there’s no Web frontend for people to search the data. Whether Google ever even wanted to make Google Base into a long-term frontend product is debatable, although what’s not debatable is that it was a user interface mess from the start. What Happened to the Structured Content Dream?Looking at how Google Base evolved, one has to ask: was retail data the only valuable thing that came out of Google Base? Did the grand dream of all types of structured content never pan out? The main problem with structured content has always been that you can’t rely on people to upload reliable data for a variety of reasons ranging from motivation to accuracy. As I wisecracked back in 2005, “Google could in fact be building the world’s largest database of structured shite.”That’s not to say that structured content isn’t alive and well. But nowadays the main initiative around this is the W3C’s Linked Data, which is getting good uptake from governments and commercial companies alike. Google is obviously still innovating with new types of data, structured and otherwise, but it no longer views Google Base as a good source of that data. Or at least, not good enough to actively foster – because it’s about to deprecate the Google Base API.Google Base to Lose its API In December last year, Google announced that it is deprecating the Google Base Data API and replacing it with two new APIs: the Content API for Shopping and the Search API for Shopping. The Google Base Data API will be “fully retired” on June 1, 2011. What this means for Google Base is unclear, but it’s obvious that Google is far more interested in developing the shopping spin-off, Merchant Center. It appears to be giving up on actively developing its database for other types of structured content. In an FAQ about the API deprecation, Google stated:“The new Shopping APIs won’t support use cases that require uploading & searching data for non-shopping applications like Real Estate, Events, Jobs, Activities and other custom structured content applications.”While Google Base lives on, it’s a much diluted product. Retail data was clearly the only valuable user-generated content that Google got out of it. Let us know in the comments whether you’ve used Google Base, in the past or now. We’ve only lost once in our past nine League matches and been beaten only twice at home in 2019.“There’s a feeling that the chance exists for a change and at least one different club to break into the top six this season. I would even go one step further. I believe there is an opportunity for someone different to actually make it into the top four!“After that, you look at Arsenal, who could easily have lost at Watford last weekend; Chelsea, where Frank Lampard has done incredibly well to play young English players but are banned from signing anyone and have lost Eden Hazard; plus United, who are, let’s say, in transition. Even Wolves, who did so well last season, are finding it tough with their Europa League commitments.” last_img read more
