SA cyclist shatters 10-second barrier

first_img22 January 2013 Making full use of the Mexican high altitude conditions, the London 2012 Olympian obliterated the old record by 0.448 seconds to record a masterful 9.786 seconds. Cycling’s world governing body, the UCI, will shortly confirm the qualified riders for the UCI World Track Championships, which take place in Minsk, Belarus from 20 to 24 February. Esterhuizen’s name is expected on the list following his superb showing in Aguascalientes. Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? See: Using SAinfo material It was an excellent weekend for Esterhuizen, who also finished in 11th place in the Keirin event after progressing to the second round with ease. The 20-year-old became the first South African rider to break the magical 10-second barrier over 200m, which could be equated to breaking the 10-second barrier for the 100m in athletics. Juan Peralta Gascon of Spain was the fastest qualifier in a time of 9.633 seconds. Kevin Sireau of France holds the World record of 9.572 seconds. SAinfo reporter Denis Dmitriev of Russia was the overall winner with Max Niederlag of Germany in second and Juan Peralta Gascon of Spain rounding out the placings. Significant stridesHis performances show the significant strides he has made since placing 11th in the sprint at London 2012. Esterhuizen is working with a new coach, having in December joined up with Andy Sparks, who coached him to the Junior 1Km World Time Trial title in 2010. Esterhuizen, however, won all three of his subsequent rides to win the B-final and finish in a credible ninth position overall. QualifyingAfter qualifying in eighth position out of 49 starters (only the fastest 16 riders qualify) he had a tough ride in the first round, narrowly losing to experienced Frenchman Michael D’Almeida who qualified in ninth position. South Africa’s Bernard Esterhuizen turned in a scintillating display of sprint cycling at the UCI Track World Cup in Aguascalientes, Mexico on the weekend, smashing his own national record of 10.234 seconds in the 200m sprint qualifying event. Nolan Hoffman, the winner of a silver medal in the 15km scratch race at the 2012 World Championships, has already qualified for the World Champs, which should mean South Africa will be represented in the endurance and sprint disciplines.last_img read more

SA makes presence felt at Cannes

first_img22 May 2013 South Africa is making its presence felt at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival, where three SA features have been well received, the first image of the highly anticipated Nelson Mandela biopic has gone public, and crime thriller Zulu, set and filmed in SA, is due to close the festival. Backed by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), three South African films receive market screenings at Cannes this week: Diprente Productions’ comedy Blitz Patrollie, Triggerfish Animation’s new feature Khumba, and Ten10Films ‘Black South Easter. Speaking to the NFVF after the screening of Khumba, an animated story about a young zebra’s quest to “gain his stripes”, Australian attendee Veronique she said she was deeply touched. “It’s an emotional, heart-warming story which will resonate with all the audiences. I also noticed that the stripes on all the zebras are uniquely different. Congratulations to South Africa on this beautiful story”. Kirsten Barwise of producers Triggerfish said the attention that both Khumba and Adventures in Zambezia, the company’s first animated feature, were receiving in Cannes had been phenomenal. “Both the films have been bought by France, and Adventures in Zambezia will be releasing in France in August 2013,” Barwise told the NFVF. Blitz Patrollie, for its part, has caught the attention of Germany, according to the NFVF. “This partnership comes as outstanding news, as South Africa and Germany have a co-production treaty, which could open doors to Diprente Production’s future co-production projects with Germany.” South African company Videovision Entertainment, meanwhile, has had a busy week at Cannes. On Monday, the company released the first image of Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, the highly anticipated big screen adaptation of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography. The teaser poster, the first of a series of images that will be rolled out in the coming weeks, was released at an event at Cannes attended by producer Anant Singh and Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of The Weinstein Company, which has acquired the film for distribution in the United States. The film is due for release in South Africa later this year. Videovision has also acquired, for distribution in South Africa, two films that are in competition at Cannes – The Immigrant and Only God Forgives – as well as Blood Ties, which is screening out of competition. In February, Videovision also acquired distribution rights for the film selected to close this year’s festival, the crime thriller Zulu. Starring Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom as two policemen called in to investigate the gruesome murder of a national rugby hero’s daughter in post-apartheid South Africa, Zulu was filmed on location in Cape Town. Snapchat, Home Of The Self-Destructing Snap, Lets Some Images Stick Around

first_imgThe Dos and Don’ts of Brand Awareness Videos selena larson Snapchat, the mobile messaging app that boomed on the strength of ephemeral photo “snaps”—often enough, racy (or worse) “sexts”—has apparently decided that “temporary social media” posts that disappear seconds after sending may not be all that after all.Today the company unveiled “Snapchat Stories,” which are collections of snaps from the previous 24 hours that users and their friends can watch over and over. You can share stories with friends and access ones shared with you (you’ll find them under “recent updates”) for up to 24 hours.Creating a story starts the same way you’d send a snap to a friend; it just requires choosing the “My Story” option instead of a friend. Snap an image with your smartphone camera, and it’s then saved to your story collection, which you can keep expanding with additional snaps. Snapchat’s popularity has mushroomed to the point that some rumors suggest it may be approaching a $1 billion valuation. (CEO Evan Spiegel said last month that users send 350 million snaps a day.) Snapchat has caught some flack for the fact that snaps don’t really disappear—they can linger in temporary phone storage—but the company responded with a complete breakdown of where exactly all those sexts are stored. With the release of Stories, the Verge noted, Snapchat comes one step closer to competing with Facebook’s News Feed product, where posts and photos live longer than mere seconds. Although the new feature only saves collections for 24 hours, it gives users the ability to save and share their Snapchat narratives with a broader audience, making memories not so fleeting.  Facebook is Becoming Less Personal and More Pro… Image via Flickr user James Mitchell, CC 2.0 Guide to Performing Bulk Email Verification A Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Related Posts Tags:#photo sharing#Snapchat#social media last_img read more

Hand Gesture Video Editing with FCPX and Leap Motion Controller

first_imgEdit your Final Cut Pro X video projects in mid air with a swipe of your fingers – wave of the future or simply a gimmick?A while back we shared a video editing workflow that was based on hand gestures and an Apple Trackpad. The video below takes it one step further, touch-free video editing through hand motions and finger gestures. Can we expect this to be a viable method of video editing in the future? For those unfamiliar, the Leap Motion Controller is (from Wikipedia):a small USB peripheral device which is designed to be placed on a physical desktop, facing upward. Using two cameras and three infrared LEDs, the device… is designed to track fingers (or similar items such as a pen) which cross into the observed area.Early users of the device report it’s astonishingly accurate and some industry analysts are wondering if it will “change the way we use computers“. Post production device manufacturer Editors Keys have jumped on the bandwagon, designing the first application to support video editing with the Leap controller. The finished app should support over 50 unique gestures for video editing and retail for 99 cents. Check out the video below for a sneak peek.Although it’s certainly neat teach, we can hardly imagine editing like this day-in and day-out. How precise can it actually be? Could it actually be faster than using a mouse/computer? How long until your arms give out?!Share your thoughts in the comments!  Thanks for the tip, FCP.co.last_img read more

Simulating Depth Using Vanishing Points in After Effects

first_imgTurn your 2D images into 3D worlds with the astonishing Vanishing Point feature in After Effects.Vanishing Point is one of those really cool effects in After Effects that will always be impressive no matter how many times you use it. In a nutshell, Vanishing Point simulates a 3D environment by creating a simulated 3D projection. While it doesn’t work in every situation, if you have a room with good four-corner perspective, you can create some amazing results. Here’s a quick example. We can take this image:And convert it to this using Vanishing Point in After Effects:Let’s take a look at this awesome feature inside of After Effects and discuss a few ways to make your Vanishing Point videos even better.Step 1: Create a Vanishing Point Grid in PhotoshopIn order to create a Vanishing Point in Photoshop and After Effects, you need to use a combination of both Photoshop and After Effects. First things first, you need to open your photo in Photoshop then navigate to Filter>Vanishing Point or simply hit Option+Command+V.You will see a window pop up. In the window, select the Create Planes tool (C). Make a small rectangle around the back wall of your Vanishing Point image. Make the box as straight as possible. After you set the edges of your base plane, you can drag the edges of the frame to create the Vanishing Point effect by holding down command. You will probably have to adjust the edges if they aren’t 100% flush with the edges of the walls. You can do this by holding down command and adjusting one edge and corner at a time. If for any reason your plane turns red, you may need to stretch the edges of your frame further in z-space.Step 2: Export for After EffectsAfter you’ve created all four edges in your frame, it’s time to export your video to After Effects. Before you hit that ‘OK’ button, navigate to the menu button in the upper left of the Vanishing Point window and then hit Export for After Effects. You will need to designate a place to save the .vpe file on your computer.Step 3: Import Vanishing Point FileOpen up After Effects. With an After Effects project open, navigate to File>Import>Vanishing Point. Now select the Vanishing Point file on your computer and hit ‘OK.’ You should now see a folder with five images pop up in your project panel along with a new composition.Step 4: Adjust the CompositionClick inside the new composition and you will see a composition made up of five images, a parent, and a camera. By default, the width of the composition will be the same as the width of the image file in Photoshop. You will likely want to change the width of the composition to a standard 1080p composition, but you can simply select one of the presets in composition settings.Depending on your scene, you may need to adjust the rotation of your parent. If you need to move in or out of the scene, I recommend using the zoom feature versus physically moving the camera in 3D space.Tips for Creating Better Vanishing PointsDepth of FieldIf you want to make your new 3D Vanishing Point look even more real, you should try adding a simple depth of field to your scene. A depth of field can simulate a real-life environment and really help sell your composition. To do this, navigate to the camera options in your timeline turn the depth of field on. You can then adjust the depth of field by messing with the aperture and blur level.LightsOne of the cool things about working with a Vanishing Point: the layers created in photoshop will actually work in 3D space. So like any other 3D composition in After Effects, you can adjust your layers to accept 3D lights. This can create some really cool results if you are wanting to integrate 3D motion graphics into your scene.3D Models and TextThere are a lot of reasons why you may want to put text or objects into your 3D scene. No matter what the reason, it’s easy to do. Simply turn 2D layers to 3D and place them in your scene. You can also use 3D effects like Trapcode Particular and Element 3D in your Vanishing Point ‘room.’Tutorial on Vanishing Points in After EffectsIn this video tutorial from Mikey Borup at PremiumBeat, we learn how to use the technique listed above to create a Vanishing Point room. In the tutorial, Borup shows us how to create simulated shadows using text layers and rotation. The tutorial also outlines how important it is to use depth of field to really sell a shot.Ever messed around with Vanishing Points in After Effects? first_imgAbout the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say Noble insists West Ham should be targeting top fourby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveWest Ham captain Mark Noble insists they should be targeting a top four this season.Noble feels a win against United can show they are serious about playing in Europe next season. He said: “It’s easy to understand why we’re relishing the visit of Manchester United on Sunday. We’ve only lost once in our past nine League matches and been beaten only twice at home in 2019.“There’s a feeling that the chance exists for a change and at least one different club to break into the top six this season. I would even go one step further. I believe there is an opportunity for someone different to actually make it into the top four!“After that, you look at Arsenal, who could easily have lost at Watford last weekend; Chelsea, where Frank Lampard has done incredibly well to play young English players but are banned from signing anyone and have lost Eden Hazard; plus United, who are, let’s say, in transition. Even Wolves, who did so well last season, are finding it tough with their Europa League commitments.” last_img read more
